A vintage re-edition before vintage re-editions were all the rage, this Silverstone was released in 2010 to celebrate TAG Heuer’s 150-year anniversary and was limited to 1,860 units.
The Monaco has become one of the most iconic watches ever built by Heuer or TAG Heuer. However, when it was first released and sold in the 1970s, it was mostly a commercial failure – even with the backing of Steve McQueen on the silver screen in 1971’s “Le Mans.” This has created a strong collecting market for the Monaco today, combining relative rarity and historical importance as the model was powered by the caliber 11, one of the first automatic chronograph movements. In 1972, Heuer replaced the struggling Monaco with the Silverstone, a similar shaped chronograph upgraded in both the movement, to the calibre 12, and the design, steering firmly to 1970s funk. Calling to motorsport, this time at Britain’s Grand Prix rather than that of the city-state of Monaco, the Silverstone stuck around the catalog until it was discontinued in the early to mid-1980s.
TAG Heuer brought the TAG Heuer Silverstone Replica back in 2010 to commemorate 150 years since the brand’s founding in 1860. The re-edition featured a modern take on the same movement family that powered the original, TAG Heuer’s interpretation of the caliber 11, which was brought back in 2009 for a Monaco special edition. For the modern Silverstone, TAG Heuer went with two different dial colors, blue and brown, both harkening back to dial options for the model in the 1970s. If there are two ends of the modern re-edition spectrum – extremely true to the original and generally inspired but a new take – the Silverstone certainly veers toward the former. Outside of a slightly larger case and the lack of a bracelet option, the 2010 TAG Heuer Silverstone Limited Edition offers everything that is great about the 1970s model with modern reliability.
This TAG Heuer Silverstone Replica Ref. CAM2111 is number 0431 out of 1860 and in excellent overall pre-owned condition, indicating that there are signs of very light wear, possibly some small scratches on the case. The case has been professionally refinished. The dial is in excellent condition with a starburst finish that is true to the vintage brown dialed Silverstone of the 1970s. This dial finish really plays with the light and offers an added level of dimension. The TAG Heuer Silverstone Replica case is marked with information about the model, the reference number “CAM211,” and the serial number “RBT4XXX” on the outer edge of the exhibition caseback. The TAG Heuer-signed brown leather racing strap is a new replacement sourced through the manufacturer. During our quality control check, any necessary adjustments are made to ensure the watch is functioning as intended.
TAG Heuer’s iconic sports watches won their fame and accolades on the wrists of legend from the worlds of motorsport and Hollywood. Andretti, Siffert, Rindt, Senna and McQueen: all wore watches such as the Carrera, the Monaco, the Autavia, and the Monza.
