Since its introduction in 2020, a launch that marked a new step in the life of the emblematic chronograph of TAG Heuer, the classic Carrera 42mm has been presented in an array of editions, ranging from non-limited models in blue, black or grey, but also some bolder versions in gold, matching the style of the 911 2.7 RS or with colourful accents. Now, all of these watches, even limited ones, were made in relatively large numbers, and available worldwide. However, the latest version of the Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42mm is one that will require you to visit France (not the worst place to travel…), but it’s also one of the best-looking editions to date.
The present model, TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42mm France Limited Edition, is as you’ve guessed, a regional model that will only be made for the French market and in 200 pieces only. It is also available on the brand’s e-commerce website, but only when navigating from France. I’d say that, if you’re not living in France, it is also a very good occasion for a romantic trip to Paris… And to treat yourself to a nice watch too.
Objectively, we’re talking about cosmetic changes here, the watch being identical otherwise to classic editions of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42mm, as we’ve reviewed them here. This means a modern timepiece with historical elements of the now-iconic 1963-born chronograph, including the faceted lugs and straight case bands. This edition, which measures 42mm in diameter with a respectable height of 15.7mm, is the sleekest of the collection with a smooth polished bezel and no tachymeter scale to be found. The right side is home to a large crown and two oversized pump pushers. The dial is protected by a bevelled sapphire crystal and water-resistance is rated at 100 metres.
What matters for this France limited edition is the dial, which discreetly takes on the colours of the French flag. No worries, nothing too loud or gimmicky. But still, the classic blue-white-red theme is there, with a matte blue, grained dial punctuated by silvery-white elements – sub-dials and inner seconds flange – as well as discreet touches of red on the small seconds, as well as the main hands. The watch is, otherwise, sleek and focused on the essentials. Complementing this French theme is a navy blue perforated strap, closed by a folding buckle.
Under the sapphire caseback is a well-known movement, the in-house TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42mm. This integrated automatic chronograph movement is equipped with a column-wheel and a vertical clutch. It runs at a modern frequency of 4Hz and boasts a comfortable power reserve of 80 hours. For this special edition, the rotor and column-wheel are coloured in blue.
